I have known about the work of Dr. William A. Tiller for a couple of decades. He was Professor Emeritus and former Chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University and the author of Science and Human Transformation: Subtle Energies, Intentionality and Consciousness. I even included a summary of his thinking in Spiritual Democracy, my presentation, in In Search of a Revelation, of the spiritual philosophy I derived from my reflections on my own spiritual experiences. But I never tried to meet him, and I deeply regret that now that he is deceased.
From what I have read about him, most recently in the excellent website devoted to his work, www.tillerfoundation.com, he was a genuinely good man who had a profound and, in the end, profoundly simple insight. He postulated that the speed of light did not establish the boundary to reality, beyond which nothing could exist. Rather, he propounded that the speed of light, in fact, established the boundary between two dimensions of reality, the material and the spiritual.
Professor Tiller recognized that one of the implications of Albert Einstein’s famous equation, E=MC2 – that matter approaches an infinite density when it approaches the speed of light – did not mean that nothing existed at speeds faster than the speed of light, just that matter did not. Rather, there is a whole realm of spiritual substance that vibrates at speeds faster than the speed of light. He even proposed that Einstein’s equations suggest such a reality as a kind of mirror spiritual image of physical reality.
According to orthodox science, photons, the units of light, are massless and, of course, travel at the speed of light. Professor Tiller postulates that: “Nature is radiating to itself via many different bands of photons as communicators of many different classes of operational substances most of which travel faster than the speed of light…Over the past 400 years, we have learned a great deal about only one band, the electromagnetic band. Eventually, during our future evolutionary path, we must come to…understand the inner workings of all these separate bands plus how they might or might not interact with each other.” (All Tiller quotes are from www.tillerfoundation.com.)
Thus, Professor Tiller, as a scientist and engineer of some note, came right out and said that the spiritual realm is real – the foundational principle of a Philosophy of Spiritual Realism. And, the spiritual realm follows rules that we can learn about and formulate. We just cannot learn about them using traditional physical means, because physical matter and energy cannot cross the speed-of-light boundary and touch them.
Professor Tiller retired from his Stanford professorship in 1992 and spent the next 28 years, until his death in 2020, developing what he called Psychoenergetic Science (now referred to as Intention Science) as a formulation how the spiritual realm functions and how it relates to the material realm of physical matter and energy.
Psychoenergetic/Intention Science suggests a new reference frame, that nature has two levels of reality, not one. In addition to our conventionally understood positive space-time reality, which he calls Domain Space (D-space) there is another reciprocal reality, which he calls Radiance Space (R-space). According to Tiller’s model, in positive D-space, energy and matter vibrate and move at speeds less than or near to the speed of light, and they have a basic nature that is “electromagnetic”. In negative R-space, a non-physical virtual substance is vibrational, moves at speeds faster than the speed of light, and has a basic nature that is “magnetoelectric”.
D-Space
Positive D-space is the realm of physical matter and the physical world where:
- Electricity is the primary force in electromagnetic fields.
- There is a tendency toward increasing positive entropy (disorder) in closed systems.
- Velocities are limited to the speed of light.
- Likes repel, and opposites attract.
R-Space
Negative R-space is a realm of subtle substance/spirit and the metaphysical world where:
- Magnetism is the primary force in magnetoelectric fields.
- There is a tendency toward increasing order or syntropy (negative entropy).
- Velocities are in excess of the speed of light.
- Likes attract, and opposites repel.
.According to Psychoenergetic/Intention Science, the magnetoelectric force is carried by “deltron” particle/waves, which allow the attractive, integrative, hyperconscious magnetoelectric forces from R-Space to interact with matter and electric energy in D-Space. And these deltronic waves can be guided by conscious intentions
Deltrons
The magnetoelectric flows of deltrons between R-space and D-Space constitute the subtle energies that bring order into the physical world and counteract the effects of the second law of thermodynamics, entropy, whereby disorder tends to increase over time until randomness occurs in closed systems.
Just as entropy characterizes the closed physical systems of D-Space, we can say that “syntropy” characterizes the metaphysical systems of R-Space.
Unlike the situation in the physical world of D-Space where matter always has mass, the subtle substance – sometimes referred to as virtual matter – of R-Space has no mass per se but has vibrational frequency in what amounts to a spiritual medium.
D-Space and R-Space can exist in either an “uncoupled state” or a “coupled state.” The deltronic magnetoelectic flows between D-Space and R-Space establish the coupled state in which the R-Space subtle (faster-than-the-speed-of-light) energy patterns guide the action of matter and energy in D-Space.
The deltronic R-Space magnetoelectric flows are the subtle energies that make up the Ki energy of the martial arts, the Ch’i energy of acupressure, the Prana energy of the chakras, Nadi channels of Yoga, and Rupert Sheldrake’s morphic fields. Our consciousness is our internal experience of these deltronic magnetoelectric fields.
The deltronic magnetoelectric fields establish a coupled reality between D-Space and R-Space in us that forms the unity that is the ground for the succession of our spacio/temporal instants. Our conscious intentions guide these deltronic magnetoelectric fields within the context of that portion of the consciousness spectrum that we inhabit.
Participation in the faster-than-the-speed-of-light R-Space allows us to, so to speak, rise above our succession of temporal moments and unify them.
When we mentally talk to ourselves or we speak aloud to someone else, these deltronic magnetoelectric fields are what allow us to begin a sentence in one moment, continue it in a succession of other moments, and complete it in a final moment and yet the whole sentence makes sense. They provide the underlying unity that allows us to connect a succession of instants to form a sentence, or a whole developed complex thought, or a whole developed complex action.
Dr. Tiller and his team undertook a number of rigorous, double blind experiments to demonstrate the role of conscious intention in guiding deltronic magnetoelectric flows to impact physical reality. In his experiments, meditators were able to change the PH of water at great distances from the meditators’ physical locations by affecting the deltronic magnetoelectric flows with their conscious intentions.
Consciousness
From this perspective, the mental dimension of reality is the interface between the physical realm and the spiritual realm. Mind is what happens when the spiritual interfaces with the physical, in Dr. Tiller’s terms, when R-Space interfaces with D-Space through the deltronic magnetoelectic flows. Panpsychism’s assertion that all reality has a mental dimension and a physical dimension – that consciousness extends all the way up through the galaxy and beyond and all the way down through the atom and beyond – is true, but it is not the whole story in that the mental dimension is what emerges at the boundary between the spiritual and the physical realms of reality.
In this context, our consciousness in each present moment is a portal between our experience of the time-bound D-Space material world and our experience of the metaphysical R-Space virtual world that is beyond typical space/time. Mindfulness opens that door more widely. In Vision Meditation, we can walk through the door and participate directly in the R-Space world.
The more we strengthen our physical, psychological, energy, and spiritual vehicles and the more consistent our Mindfulness practice, the more easily we can enter the metaphysical world and the further we can go. And, at the same time, the more powerful the impacts we can produce in the material world.
Since all subtle substance is massless. There are no limits to the speed at which subtle substance can vibrate and travel. In fact the speed of entities in R-Space can approach infinity, where time is essentially transcended, and then these entities are essentially everywhere all at once.
Utilizing the concept of the deltronic magnetoelectric subtle substance Psychoenergetic Science can provide explanations for a wide range of psychic phenomena, including extra-sensory perception, psychokinesis, out-of-the-body experiences, and near-death experiences.
Tiller’s theory provides an explanation of the seemingly paradoxical behavior of the quantum particles/waves that, according to the science of Quantum Mechanics, go in and out of existence and can produce instantaneous action at a distance through “quantum entanglement.”
According to the explanation inherent in Tiller’s theory, the quantum particle/waves go in and out of material existence because they cross back and forth across the speed-of-light barrier. Two particles can become entangled and produce instantaneous action at a distance by virtue of having a connection in the faster-than-the-speed-of-light vibratory realm.
If it is true that Quantum particles/waves at the smallest end of the size spectrum exist on both sides of the speed-of-light-boundary, it is certainly the case that people do also.
Spiritual Senses
According to this perspective, In addition to our physical senses, every human being has a set of spiritual senses (inner seeing, inner hearing, inner sensing) that can experience and act in the faster-than-the-speed-of-light spiritual realm.
During pre-civilization times, humanity lived lives of spiritual participation. During that era, everyone experienced the physical dimension with their physical senses and also they had a certain access to their spiritual senses, recognizing the spiritual aspects of places, plants, animals, and people. Shamans had pretty much full access to their spiritual senses.
With the emergence of civilization, most of humanity evolved away from direct spiritual participation. Those of us with a secular orientation came to live without any conscious engagement with the spiritual dimension at all, treating our spiritual senses as if they didn’t exist.
Those of us with a religious orientation came to have a conscious engagement with some particular aspect of the spiritual dimension of reality mediated by our particular Faiths which were launched by the teachings of different prophets who had deep access to their spiritual senses and the revelations that manifested through them. Jesus and Mohammad are two of the clearest examples of such prophets.
The Eastern traditions of Buddhism, Yoga, and Taoism offer approaches to the more expanded development of some of our spiritual senses in certain specific ways within a Faith context.
However, the times are changing and spiritual participation is returning to be a more common experience. And, as this new era emerges, many of us are coming to recognize that the spiritual dimension has many different realms.
The Creator
According to the guiding principle of syntropy (negative entropy), the constantly increasing order in the R-space spiritual realm leads to a hierarchy of unified and unifying forces that can be seen as spirits and Gods, eventually arriving at what is essentially, from our perspective, perfect order or the Creator or the Absolute or however we care to characterize the Ultimate.
By systematically engaging with consciousness practices, we can come to transcend the separation between the spiritual and the physical established by incarnation and consciously re-engage with the Creator – with that perfect order – and consciously experience everything as an aspect of the Creator, and consciously participate in assisting the Creator with the evolution of Creation in the little Universe on the tiny planet where we live.
The Connection
My book In Search of a Revelation tells my version of this story but, when I wrote it, I was still implicitly compartmentalizing my spiritual experiences into a different order of reality, only somehow connected with the physical world mysteriously in a way that I did not fully understand. Professor Tiller made the connection. The spiritual realm and the material realm are clearly connected with the speed-of-light establishing the boundary and the mental dimension providing the interface.
In fact, the realms interpenetrate each other. “However, under normal conditions, these two very different kinds of substance occupy the same general space but do not interact with each other. We label this the uncoupled state of physical reality. In this state, our traditional measurement instruments are unable to directly detect the [magnetic] information wave substance [because] today’s measurement instruments are primarily electromagnetic (EM) and thus are limited by signal velocities at the velocity of light”
Deltronic magneto-electric waves can connect the two subspaces when the deltronic waves are activated by human consciousness and intention. Professor Tiller labels this “the coupled state”. In the coupled state, spiritual forces guided by deltronic consciousness can change the properties of physical matter.
Therefore, I can finally rest easy in the recognition that we inhabit one reality, with the spiritual dimension and the material dimension connected by the mental dimension. This is the core recognition from which the whole Philosophy of Spiritual Realism emerges.
